DML News Morning Briefing, April 11th

1.Whole Foods in San Francisco closing one year after opening due to safety concerns: report
Fox News – Whole Foods Market announced that a store in downtown San Francisco, will be closed after Monday, just over a year after the store first opened, because of crime in the city, according to a report.

The grocery store chain said the Whole Foods located at Eighth and Market streets will be closed temporarily as it deals with crime near the store that impacted its workers’ safety.

“We are closing our Trinity location only for the time being,” a Whole Foods spokesperson said in a statement. “If we feel we can ensure the safety of our team members in the store, we will evaluate a reopening of our Trinity location.”

Deteriorating street conditions around drug use and crime near the grocery store led to the Whole Foods location closing its doors, according to The San Francisco Standard.

2. More revelations emerge from leaked U.S. intelligence documents
CNBC – Washington is continuing to investigate the purported Pentagon intelligence leaks, which have brought forth new controversial information about adversaries and allies alike.

Details emerging from the leaks have angered allies like South Korea because of reports that the CIA monitored lawmaker conversations in Seoul; they also allege that U.S. ally Egypt is secretly producing ammunition and rockets for Russia.

Another report from the leak is a purported CIA update from early March saying that Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, encouraged its officers to join local protests against controversial reforms being pushed by the Israeli government. The Israeli administration denied Mossad had any part in the protests.

3.Elderly woman, 78, loses her $350,000 New York home after her neighbor’s 35-year-old daughter ‘FORGED deed to become legal owner of the property for just $10’
Daily Mail – A 35-year-old New York woman has been arrested on charges of forging a deed to seize ownership of an elderly woman’s house – but she insists she was given the house as a thanks for caring for her.

Aurelia Soogea, 35, appeared in court in Nassau County, on Long Island, on Friday and pleaded not guilty to forgery and theft.

She is accused of paying $10 to transfer the deed of her mother’s neighbor’s $350,000 home to her name.

The owner, 78-year-old Rosemarie Mika, claims that she was informed of the deed transfer in a letter from Nassau County authorities.

Mika then called police.

DML: This story irks me to no end, as the scumbag woman clearly stole the house from an old lady. The courts in NY better protect the homeowner instead of the thief.

4.Chinese aircraft, ships remain around Taiwan after drills end
Reuters – Chinese warplanes and navy ships were still in the waters around Taiwan, the island’s defence ministry said on Tuesday after the end of three days of war games, as Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen criticised Beijing for its “irresponsible” behaviour.

China began the exercises on Saturday after Tsai returned to Taipei following a meeting in Los Angeles with U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

5.COVID caused brain damage in 2 infants infected during pregnancy -US study
Forbes – If you are wondering what could possibly go wrong with getting Covid-19 while you are pregnant, take a look at a recent publication in Pediatrics. This publication detailed two separate cases of newborns ending up with quite severe brain damage after their mothers had had Covid-19 while pregnant. And one of those mothers didn’t even have symptoms while she was infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Add these two cases to the growing list of things that you should hate about Covid-19.
