DML Morning Briefing Wed. Aug. 24

Biggest Senate race in US now on, a 25-yr-old gun activist wins race, and more…

By Anneta Griffee

Today is August 24. Below are some of the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room.

1 – Contest is set for one of the most competitive seats in the Senate
The Washington Examiner reports: Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) won the Democratic nomination for Senate in Florida on Tuesday, setting up a November battle between the Democratic lawmaker and incumbent Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), a contest expected to be one of the most competitive Senate races in the country.

The nomination finalized the general election lineup, although Rubio and Demings have been running against each other for months, as neither faced viable primary challengers.

Demings, who has represented Florida’s 10th Congressional District since 2017, is a former chief of the Orlando Police Department. Rubio is seeking a third Senate term after an unsuccessful 2016 presidential bid raised his national profile. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has rated the race as “lean Republican.”

Rubio has consistently led polling in the contest, but one recent survey, released by the Public Opinion Research Lab at the University of North Florida, found Demings leading Rubio 48% to 44%, suggesting the race will be competitive.

MY TAKE: Floridians, don’t let Demings win that Senate seat!!!

2 – 25-year-old Maxwell Alejandro Frost wins Democratic nomination to succeed Demings
The Hill reports: Maxwell Alejandro Frost, a 25-year-old gun control activist, is projected to clinch the Democratic nomination on Tuesday to succeed Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.) in the House.

Frost overcame a crowded primary field that included longtime Florida Democratic politicos, including former Reps. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) and Corrine Brown (D-Fla.). Given the strong Democratic tilt of Florida’s 10th District, he’s almost certain to win the seat in November and become among the first Gen Z members of the House.

Throughout the primary, Frost campaigned on key progressive issues like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal. That helped him rack up support from key liberals in Washington, including Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).

Demings’ seat opened up after she opted to challenge Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) for his seat this year. She easily clinched the Democratic Senate nomination on Tuesday.

MY TAKE: This is going from bad to worse!

Here’s the Republican who won the GOP primary for that seat: Retired Army Colonel Calvin Wimbish. Will Floridians unite behind him and help beat the 25-year-old gun control activist?

3 – Dem mayor slams ‘silly’ report on his lavish, perhaps unethical, party lifestyle
Fox News reports: New York City Mayor Eric Adams slammed the New York Times on Monday after the outlet published an exposé about his trips to expensive city restaurants and nightclubs without proving that he or his entourage has been paying expenses.

The Times article, by reporters Sarah Maslin Nir and Jazmine Hughes, detailed Adams’ outings to two swanky New York City establishments where he was schmoozing with politicians and other high rollers, eating expensive meals, and so far giving no indication that he has been paying the bills.

The report detailed that if Adams were being provided free meals or free VIP status at these elite locales, it “raises ethical questions.” “Public servants are explicitly barred from accepting gifts worth $50 or more from city vendors,” the outlet noted.

According to the New York Post, Adams trashed the report shortly after it was published, calling it a “silly, silly story” and insinuating that the paper is unhealthily preoccupied with his after-work dealings.

MY TAKE: Corruption everywhere!

4 – Biden’s Sanction Relief Will Fund Iranian Terror Plots, Former US Official Says
The Free Beacon reports: The Biden administration’s nuclear deal with Iran will lift sanctions on the hardline regime’s government organization that funds assassination plots and puts bounties on the country’s political enemies, according to a former U.S. official and Iranian government documents.

As part of the administration’s efforts to secure a revamped version of the 2015 nuclear deal, the United States will unwind sanctions on an Iranian government organization called the 15 Khordad Foundation, which offers bounties for the assassination of Iran’s political enemies. The foundation, for example, is behind the $3.3 million bounty on author Salman Rushdie’s head, which is believed to have in part motivated the attacker who earlier this month stabbed Rushdie 10 times during a public appearance, nearly killing him.

“Biden’s new Iran deal would lift sanctions on the very organizations raising bounties to kill Americans,” said Gabriel Noronha, a former senior Iran adviser at the State Department during the Trump administration and now a distinguished fellow at the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs. “That will help Iran raise the funds to kill American dissidents and officials.”

MY TAKE: And they claim TRUMP was a national security threat?  Will Democrats never learn?

5 – Off-duty NYPD cop critically injured with fractured skull in horrific Bronx mugging
The New York Post reports: An off-duty veteran NYPD cop was knocked out and critically injured after he was viciously mugged while jogging in the Bronx on Tuesday morning, police and sources said.

The 48-year-old officer was running near 823 Olmstead Avenue when he was jumped by three men at about 10:30 a.m. in a horrific crime that appears to be part of a recent citywide pattern of robberies, according to cops and sources.

One of the suspects punched the cop in the head, knocking him unconscious, sources said. The cop, an 18-year veteran assigned to the Central Park precinct, was found lying on the sidewalk bleeding from his left ear and unable to stand or speak, sources said.

He had no form of identification on him at the time and was taken to Jacobi Medical Center as a John Doe with a fractured skull and bleeding to his brain, sources said. The NYPD learned later Tuesday night that he was one of New York’s finest. He was listed in critical but stable condition, the sources added.

Police said the suspects made off with the officer’s cell phone, keys and wallet, which contained several forms of identification as well as his debit and credit cards.

MY TAKE: Absolutely appalling! Democrats are turning America into a lawless pit!
