1 – BREAKING: Russia says it will cut back operations near Ukraine capital
The Associated Press reports: KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia’s military said Tuesday it would “fundamentally” cut back operations near Ukraine’s capital and a northern city, potentially a significant concession by Moscow amid talks aimed at ending the war that began more than a month ago.
Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said the move was meant “to increase trust” in talks aimed at ending fighting, as negotiators met face-to-face after several rounds of failed negotiations. But Russia’s troops have been bogged down and struggling to make major advances recently.
The talks in Istanbul raised flickering hopes there could be progress toward ending a war that has ground into a bloody campaign of attrition.
Fomin said Moscow had decided to “fundamentally … cut back military activity in the direction of Kyiv and Chernihiv” to “increase mutual trust and create conditions for further negotiations.”
An adviser to the Ukrainian president said the meeting in Istanbul was focused on securing a cease-fire and guarantees for Ukraine’s security — issues that have been at the heart of previous unsuccessful negotiations.
DML: Biden’s weakness allowed this mess to happen.
Fox Business reports: President Biden made a renewed push on Monday to galvanize congressional Democrats to overhaul the nation’s tax code and dramatically raise rates on corporations and ultra-wealthy Americans.
The president laid out the tax hikes as part of his $5.8 trillion budget blueprint for federal spending in fiscal 2023, which begins in October. Under his proposal, taxes would rise by $2.5 trillion, marking the largest increase in history in dollar terms. The deficit would be $1.15 trillion.
The higher taxes would largely be borne by Wall Street and the top sliver of U.S. households, in the form of a steeper corporate rate, a modified wealth tax and a global minimum tax.
“We are reducing the Trump deficits and returning our fiscal house to order,” Biden said at the White House on Monday, referring to the widening spending gap under former President Donald Trump. He said the budget “makes prudent investment and economic growth, a more equitable economy, while making sure corporations and the very wealthy pay their fair share.”
The taxes outlined on Monday include a minimum 20% tax on the incomes of U.S. households worth $100 million or more – similar to other proposals that Democrats floated last year to pay for Biden’s massive spending plan. But those pitches fell to the wayside after talks with West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin collapsed.
DML: This is only going to result in LESS jobs, not more. Democrats don’t have a CLUE how to help America prosper.
3 – Biden caught using cheat sheet while doubling down on unscripted message to oust Putin
The New York Post reports: President Joe Biden once again referred to a printed cheat sheet sheet as he doubled down on his unscripted weekend claim that Vladimir Putin “cannot remain in power.”
On Monday Biden, 79, told reporters he made “no apologies” for his remarks — made off the cuff and not part of his prepared speech in a nationally televised address from Poland Saturday — and did not view it as a provocation to Russia.
“It’s more an aspiration than anything. He shouldn’t be in power. There’s no — I mean, people like this shouldn’t be ruling countries, but they do. The fact is they do, but it doesn’t mean I can’t express my outrage about it.”
His comments closely aligned with notes printed on a small piece of paper that he was photographed holding in his left hand as he spoke that began as follows:
If you weren’t advocating for regime change, what did you mean? Can you clarify?
I was expressing the moral outrage I felt towards the actions of this man
I was not articulating a change in policy

4 – NFL requiring all teams to hire female or minority coach
TMZ reports: The NFL is now requiring all 32 of its teams to hire either a minority or a female coach to their offensive staffs — mandating that the new assistant work “closely” with teams’ current head coaches.
The league announced the rule change on Monday … explaining it wants the new assistants on the offensive side of the ball because it believes owners and GMs have trended toward hiring new head coaches from offensive backgrounds as opposed to defensive ones.
The belief, according to a statement from the league, is that getting more minorities and women into significant positions on offensive staffs could then lead to more minority and female head coaching hires.
“In recent years, head coaches have predominantly had offensive backgrounds,” the league said Monday. “We believe this resolution will assist greatly in continuing to source and identify diverse candidates earlier in their career.”
Teams will have to make the hires at the beginning of this season … though clubs who already have a minority or a female on their offensive staff are already considered to have fulfilled the requirement.
DML: I’m DONE with the NFL.
5 – AOC gives advice on parental leave – can’t say mother, but will say dad
Democrat Socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has no children, but she gave some advice and opinions on parental leave in a recent video to her Instagram followers.
The RNC Research Twitter account published the video, noting that “AOC refuses to use the word “moms,” using the term “birthing parent” instead. For some reason, she is fine using the word “dads,” though.”
DML: What’s more scary – that this woman is in Congress, or that there were enough people to elect her into Congress by a landslide?
