Today is July 21. Below are some of the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room.
1 – Two Texas men indicted in deaths of 53 migrants found in sweltering hot truck
NY Post reports: Two men were indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday on charges tied to the failed smuggling operation that disastrously led to the deaths of 53 migrants in San Antonio last month, officials said.
The driver of the truck, Homero Zamorano, and the alleged planner of the operation, Christian Martinez, both Texas natives, could each face life sentence or even the death penalty if convicted of counts of transporting and conspiring to transport migrants illegally resulting in death.
They were also indicted on transporting and conspiring to transport migrants illegally resulting in serious injury.
The dozens of deaths from the inhumane and sweltering conditions inside the packed 18-wheeler was the deadliest migrant smuggling operation crossing the US border from Mexico.
Zamorano, 46, and Martinez, 28, will be in federal custody, without bail, pending a trial.
MY TAKE: Terrible, horrible human beings.
2 – NEW LOW: Biden approval rating hits all-time low, only 19% support among Hispanics, poll shows
Fox News reports – President Biden’s approval rating among Americans has dropped to 31%, hitting a new all-time low of his presidency, according to a new poll.
The Quinnipac University survey released Wednesday also revealed the president’s support among Hispanics stands at just 19%, while 71% of Americans said they do not want Biden to seek re-election in 2024. Among Democrats, only 40% said that they would like to see him run again, while 54% do not want Biden to be the Democratic nominee.
According to the poll, 6 in 10 voters said they did not want to see former President Donald Trump run in the next presidential election. However, 69% of the Republicans that voted would like to see Trump as the GOP nominee, while 27% would not.
MY TAKE: Well, that’s pretty clear. Americans are DONE with Biden.
3 – Biden’s cancer claim shocks Twitter users: Either ‘biggest bombshell’ or ‘biggest gaffe’
Fox News reports: A clip of President Biden on Wednesday appearing to claim in a speech that he has cancer sparked alarm on Twitter.
Biden was visiting a former coal power plant in Somerset, Massachusetts, to discuss new executive orders to fight climate change.
While discussing the harm caused by emissions from oil refineries, Biden referenced his childhood home in Delaware and said that he and many other people he grew up with now “have” cancer.
“My mother drove us rather than us being able to walk and guess what? The first frost, you know what was happening? You had to put on your windshield wipers to get literally the oil slick off the window. That’s why I and so damn many other people I grew up with have cancer and why for the longest time, Delaware had the highest cancer rate in the nation,” Biden said.
“Cancer? This is either the biggest bombshell in presidential history or the biggest gaffe,” RealClearPolitics founder Tom Bevan tweeted.
MY TAKE: This is just an example of the lies he tells, like his lies about inflation, taxes, the vaccine, the Amtrak story, visiting Iraq and Afghanistan, being arrested… etc. If it’s not on the cue cards, he just says whatever comes to his fuzzy mind, IMO.
4 – She just got accepted to medical school. She’s 13.
Washington Post reports: Alena Analeigh Wicker is like other 13-year-olds in that she enjoys going to the movies, playing soccer, baking and hanging out with friends. But very much unlike other teenagers, she just got accepted to medical school.
“I’m still a normal 13-year-old,” said Alena, a student at both Arizona State University and Oakwood University, where she is simultaneously earning two separate undergraduate degrees in biological sciences. “I just have extremely good time management skills and I’m very disciplined.”
In May, Alena was offered a spot at the University of Alabama’s Heersink School of Medicine for 2024, as part of its Early Assurance Program — which offers early admission to applicants who meet specific requirements. Alena is more than 10 years younger than the average incoming medical student.
“What is age?” said Alena, who lives just outside Fort Worth and is completing most of her courses online. “You’re not too young to do anything. I feel like I have proven to myself that I can do anything that I put my heart and mind to.”
Alena’s mother, Daphne McQuarter, said that from the time she was 3 years old, she knew Alena wasn’t a typical toddler.
“Alena was gifted,” McQuarter said. “It was just how she did things and how advanced she was. She was reading chapter books.”
MY TAKE: Amazing! What a fantastic journey. It’s nice to read something in the WaPo that makes me feel good and that DOESN’T make me want to hurl something at the computer screen!
5 – The Latest Covid Surge
The New York Times reports: The Covid virus has a Darwinian quality. As variants emerge, they compete with one another to become dominant. The most contagious variants tend to win the competition because they can spread more quickly. It’s survival of the fittest.
That is why the virus has become more contagious over time. Today, the most contagious form of Covid yet — the BA.5 subvariant — is spreading around the globe. “It looks as if we are unable to control it,” Dr. Charles Chiu of the University of California, San Francisco, told The Times.
In the U.S., cases have surged recently, as has the number of hospitalized patients with Covid (although some of them were admitted for other reasons and happened to test positive for the virus while in the hospital)[.]
The report notes that “many readers aren’t sure how much attention to pay to Covid anymore,” touts the vaccines, and quotes Dr. Ashish Jha, President Biden’s Covid coordinator, who said, “I’m actually pleased to see the pandemic is not top of mind. It means we’re making progress. The last thing I want as the Covid response coordinator is for us to get back to the point where Covid dominates our lives in scary ways.”
MY TAKE: Fear is exactly what Democrats use to keep people up in arms. I read about a man who still won’t let anyone in his home unless they are masked. But either way, it’s best to get and stay as healthy as possible. That being said, here’s a word from DML:
