Today is July 19. Below are some of the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room.
1.Inflation may hit Social Security recipients twice
Fox News – Red hot inflation is inflicting financial pain on millions of U.S. households, but the rising price of everyday necessities has squeezed one group in particular: retirees living on a fixed income.
Although Social Security recipients receive a cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, that is indexed to inflation, the amount of benefits exempt from tax has remained unchanged for decades. Since 1984, retirees have owed taxes on their benefits if half the amount they receive from Social Security plus their other income comes to more than $25,000 if they are single or $32,000 if they are married filing together.
Individuals who earn more than $34,000 and couples who earn more than $44,000 can be taxed on up to 85% of their benefits.
Now, experts say the hottest inflation in a generation could ultimately push more seniors into higher tax brackets as a result of what’s likely to be a record-high cost-of-living increase.
DML: This is sinful. This is Joe Biden. I am so sorry if you’re a retiree and this happening to you! How are you supposed to survive.
2.Putin heads to Tehran for talks with leaders of Iran, Turkey
Ap News – Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Iran starting Tuesday is intended to deepen ties with regional heavyweights as part of Moscow’s challenge to the United States and Europe amid its grinding campaign in Ukraine.
In only his second trip abroad since Russian tanks rolled into its neighbor in February, Putin is scheduled to hold talks with Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the pressing issues facing the region, including the conflict in Syria and a U.N.-backed proposal to resume exports of Ukrainian grain to ease the global food crisis.
As the West heaps sanctions on Russia and the costly campaign drags on, Putin is seeking to bolster ties with Tehran, a fellow target of severe U.S. sanctions and a potential military and trade partner. In recent weeks, Russian officials visited an airfield in central Iran at least twice to review Tehran’s weapons-capable drones for possible use in Ukraine, the White House has alleged.
DML: That meeting will be all about destroying America under Biden. If you voted for Biden, this is your fault.
3.Average U.S. retail gasoline price falls below $4.50 a gallon, AAA says
Reuters – The U.S. average retail gasoline price fell to $4.495 a gallon on Tuesday, slipping below $4.50 for the first time in nine weeks, data from the American Automobile Association (AAA) showed.
The price of U.S. gasoline averaged more than $5 a gallon for the first time ever on July 11, but since then prices have come down, as overall supply has increased and U.S. demand has moderated to some extent, in part due to higher rates.
DML: Amazing how that can happen months before the midterms. If you don’t realize this is all controlled by DC then you’re not paying attention.
4.Sesame Street’s Rosita is branded racist and could be SUED by civil rights attorney Ben Crump
DailyMail – Sesame Street has been slammed as racist after video surfaced of a character actor in costume seemingly ignoring two young black girls wanting to say hello.
A mom, who goes by __jodiii__ on Instagram, said her daughters were ‘blatantly told no’ when they tried to confront Rosita, a bilingual Muppet character from Mexico, at the Sesame Place amusement park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.
A nine-second clip of the encounter shows the two girls eagerly reaching out toward Rosita, who then visibly dismisses them as she walks by.
The mother wrote, “I’m going to keep posting this, because this had me hot. We were on our way out of sesame place and the kids wanted to stop to see the characters. THIS DISGUSTING person blatantly told our kids NO then proceeded to hug the little white girl next to us! Then when I went to complain about it, they looking at me like I’m crazy. I asked the lady who the character was and I wanted to see a supervisor and she told me SHE DIDNT KNOW !! I will never step foot in @sesameplace ever again ! And please feel free to repost this. Actually run me my money back 😡🤬so mad I stopped the video but it got me so mad when he blatantly told them no“
Sesame Place, responding to the incident on Sunday, said the actor confirmed the dismissive hand gesture seen in the video was ‘not directed to any specific person’ and instead a response to a photo request from another guest.
The video was met with outrage online, including from famed civil rights attorney Ben Crump who said the actor’s ‘disgusting behavior’ was ‘absolutely heartbreaking.’
DML: Is this not another example of a black woman crying racism when none exists? If you watch the video the character shakes his hand “no” at a white lady the moment before he passes the black kids. Meanwhile, in my opinion the mother appears to be an attention seeker. Check out some of the selfies she’s posted. In the last one, a writer for the TODAY show contacts her for what appears to be an interview. The media loves racism stories, even when they do not exist.
5.New vaccines aim to put the brakes on Covid-19 spread
CNN – As the SARS-CoV-2 virus spreads, it changes. That’s helped it get past our firewalls, the immunity created by vaccines or left behind after we recover from an infection. Which is why, well into the third year of the pandemic, we’re in the midst of another wave of Covid-19 caused by the most immune-evasive variant yet, BA.5. And more variants are coming.
Even as vaccine manufacturers race to update the first-generation shots in the hopes of patching up our protection for the fall, other scientists are taking a different approach, making vaccines delivered via nasal sprays or tablets that would deploy more immune defenders to the body’s front lines: the lining of the mouth, nose and throat.
More than a dozen nasal spray vaccines against Covid-19 are being tested around the world.
DML: Covid cases are spiking everywhere. In California hospital visits quadrupled recently, and in NY cases are up 21%. Officials warn of a massive spike right around the midterms. But instead of touting potential remedies that studies tracked by the NIH suggest may work to stop Covid from spreading and infecting, the press and DC continues to push vaccines. The following sentence and paragraphs below are copied directly from the NIH website: Our results suggest that CBD can block SARS-CoV-2 infection at early stages of infection, and CBD administration is associated with a lower risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection in humans.“
In a series of studies supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, researchers tested the effects of CBD and other cannabis compounds on SARS-CoV-2. They looked at interactions between CBD and the virus in human lung cells and in mice…
In both the laboratory studies and the health records analyses, CBD seemed to have a protective effect against SARS-CoV-2. When the virus was introduced to human lung cells treated with CBD, it could not replicate and take hold as it usually does….
Interestingly, out of more than 100 compounds in cannabis, only CBD showed this protective effect. More research, including clinical trials, is needed, but these studies suggest that CBD might be a useful way of preventing COVID-19 in the future.
