DML Morning Briefing Aug 18

By  Dennis Michael Lynch

oday is August 18. Below are some of the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room.

1.Judge to weigh whether unsealing affidavit for Mar-a-Lago raid will jeopardize Trump investigation
Fox News – A federal magistrate in Florida is set to hold a hearing Thursday on whether to make public the probable cause affidavit used to justify the FBI’s raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

The hearing is in response to several media outlets asking the court to make the affidavit public to understand the reasoning for a raid on the home of a former commander-in-chief.

Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart, who green-lit the original search warrant Aug. 5, is slated to preside over the hearing, although it is unclear whether he will make a decision from the bench or take the case under advisement.

DML: Here is the easiest question of all time. How much do you trust an Obama donating judge?

2.Trump CFO’s plea deal could make him a prosecution witness
(AP) — Donald Trump’s chief financial officer is expected to plead guilty to tax violations Thursday in a deal that would require him to testify about illicit business practices at the former president’s company, two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

Allen Weisselberg is charged with taking more than $1.7 million in off-the-books compensation from the Trump Organization over several years, including untaxed perks like rent, car payments and school tuition.

The plea deal would require Weisselberg to speak in court Thursday about the company’s role in the alleged compensation arrangement and possibly serve as a witness when the Trump Organization goes on trial in October on related charges, the people said.

The two people were not authorized to speak publicly about the case and did so on condition of anonymity.

DML: More secretive sources. Can’t trust anyone these days. More importantly, no person in American politics has been treated worse than Trump, and meanwhile, he’s one of the best policy makers of all time. It scares me how much they want this man gone from the scene.

3.Fed sees interest rate hikes continuing until inflation eases substantially, minutes show
CNBC – Federal Reserve officials at their July meeting indicated they likely would not consider pulling back on interest rate hikes until inflation came down substantially, according to minutes from the session released Wednesday.

During a meeting in which the central bank approved a 0.75 percentage point rate hike, policymakers expressed resolve to bring down inflation that is running well above the Fed’s desired 2% level.

They did not provide specific guidance for future increases and said they would be watching data closely before making that decision.

DML: I know it is taking longer than I’ve predicted, but trust when I say this will drive Democrats into oblivion.  Another rate hike will absolutely kill the housing market, it will slow corporate growth, small business won’t be able to afford taking any sort of credit lines, and the result will be jobs lost.  That’s when the cards come crumbling down.

4.Border patrol agents OPEN the gates at a crossing point letting in illegal migrants at the southern border moments after Greg Abbott’s Texas National Guard had locked them

Daily Mail – Border Patrol agents opened the gates at the southern border to let illegal migrants in – just after Texas National Guard officers had locked it.

Footage showed the armed agents – who work under the direction of the Biden administration – unbuckle the barb-wire fence before several asylum seekers – including men, women and children – walked through.

Agents then stood around chatting and finally shut the barrier between Mexico and the US after dozens had filed past them into the country, as the Texas National Guard watched on helplessly.

5.Army soldier aims to rescue desperate dog that snuck onto overseas base

Fox News – U.S. Army Specialist Howe, who is currently deployed overseas, got the surprise of his life when he spotted a little puppy recently. The pup had discovered a way to sneak onto the base.

The small dog ran through a gate and immediately clung to the soldier, Howe told Paws of War, an animal rescue nonprofit based in New York. Howe named the puppy Doc and gave him food and water, since he was “very dehydrated and desperately hungry.”

Now, Doc refuses to leave the soldier’s side.

Doc is currently being kept in foster care while he awaits a flight out to the United States. Officials are not sure of the dog’s breed as of yet; they plan to run DNA tests once the animal is on U.S. soil.

The New York-based Paws of War, headed by co-founder Robert Misseri, has brought over 300 dogs and cats — all rescued by American troops overseas — to safety in the U.S. since 2014, according to its website.

DML: Sometimes doing the news can be depressing.  I picked this story because it’s a good news story, something we can all use now and then.
