Today is December 8. Below are some of the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room.
1. Hunter Biden indicted on nine tax charges, adding to gun charges in special counsel probe:
AP News – WASHINGTON (AP) — Hunter Biden was indicted on nine tax charges in California on Thursday as a special counsel investigation into the business dealings of President Joe Biden’s son intensifies against the backdrop of the looming 2024 election.
The new charges — three felonies and six misdemeanors — are in addition to federal firearms charges in Delaware alleging Hunter Biden broke laws against drug users having guns in 2018. They come after the implosion of a plea deal over the summer that would have spared him jail time, putting the case on track to a possible trial as his father campaigns for reelection.
Hunter Biden “spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills,” special counsel David Weiss said in a statement. The charges are centered on at least $1.4 million in taxes Hunter Biden owed during between 2016 and 2019, a period where he has acknowledged struggling with addiction. The back taxes have since been paid.
Denny’s Insight: We will be discussing this development on Hunter for today’s podcast episode. This is apparently the smartest guy Joe Bien knows…
2. Elon Musk considers reinstating Alex Jones’ X account, backtracking on prior decision:
CNBC – Elon Musk said Thursday that he’d consider letting Alex Jones back onto X, nearly a year after vowing he wouldn’t reverse a ban on the conspiracy theorist best known for claiming that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax.
“Will consider,” Musk said in a Thursday post on X, in response to a user who mentioned the idea of Jones coming back. “In general, since this platform aspires to be the global town square, permanent bans should be extremely rare.”
Musk said that if someone “does say something false on this platform,” the comment will be corrected by the Community Notes feature, “whereas that would not be the case elsewhere.” He then signaled his intent to hold a poll on X about whether Jones should return.
Denny’s Insight: We’ll be talking about this interview today too! Some enlightening aspects to this interview. Jones reveals quite a bit about America’s hidden ugly side.
3. UPenn donor withdraws $100M donation after president’s congressional testimony on antisemitism:
Fox Business – A major donor to the University of Pennsylvania is withdrawing a donation worth roughly $100 million as a protest against the college’s handling of antisemitism on campus and the controversial testimony by UPenn’s president on the subject.
It added that Penn’s “permissive approach to hate speech calling for violence against Jews and laissez faire attitude toward harassment and discrimination against Jewish students would violate any policies of rules that prohibit harassment and discrimination based on religion, including those of Stone Ridge.”
Denny’s Insight: Universities need serious reformation.
4. Post-Debate Poll Finds DeSantis Won 4th GOP Primary Debate:
Daily Wire – A new 538/Washington Post/Ipsos poll conducted after the fourth Republican Party presidential primary debate found that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was named by the most respondents as having “performed best” in the debate.
DeSantis stood at center stage with former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, while former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and pharmaceutical executive Vivek Ramaswamy stood on the ends of the stage.
Of those who watched the NewsNation debate in Alabama, 30% said that DeSantis performed the best, followed by Haley, 23%; Christie, 19%; and Ramaswamy, 16%.
While 7% said that DeSantis did the worst, 9% said Haley, 31% said Christie, and 37% said Ramaswamy.
Denny’s Question: Do you think the fourth debate helped or hurt DeSantis’ chances? Do you agree with this WaPo poll?
