DML Morning Briefing Fri. Jan 8: Devastating new jobs report, Dems’ double standard, Pelosi’s impeachment push, plus more!

By  Team DML

Today is January 8 and I am Dennis Michael Lynch.

1 – BREAKING: US economy unexpectedly cuts 140,000 jobs in December as COVID surge threatens recovery
Fox News reports: The U.S. economy shed 140,000 jobs in December, the first decline in seven months as a surge in COVID-19 cases nationwide triggered a fresh wave of shutdowns and derailed the labor market’s recovery.

The unemployment rate held steady at 6.7%, the Labor Department said in its monthly payroll report, released Friday. Economists surveyed by Refinitiv expected the report to show that unemployment edged higher to 6.8% and the economy added 71,000 jobs.

In total, the U.S. has recovered roughly half of the 22 million jobs lost during the first two months of the pandemic. There are still about 9.8 million more Americans out of work than there were in February before the crisis began.

DML: The price of the lockdowns – open up the country and put people back to work!

2 – Pence to oppose 25th Amendment powers to remove Trump from office
Fox News reports: Vice President Mike Pence intends to oppose calls from both Democrats and Republicans in Congress to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove President Trump from office after the U.S. Capitol breach.

Fox News confirmed the information with sources inside the vice president’s office.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said they had placed a call to Pence urging him to take steps to remove Trump, even though the president has less than two weeks remaining in the White House before President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated Jan. 20.

Polosi vowed on Thursday that if Pence will not invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump, she will immediately begin impeachment proceedings. And Assistant House Speaker Rep. Katherine Clark went on CNN Friday morning declaring they would start impeachment proceedings next week. “Every day that Donald Trump is President of the United States is a day of grave danger,” she claimed.

CNN admitted in a Friday morning report: Moving ahead with impeachment, of course, doesn’t mean Congress would be able to remove Trump from office. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could let the clock run out and not hold an impeachment trial in his chamber given that President-elect Joe Biden will be President on January 20.

DML: Pelosi, just cool it!

3 – Capitol Hill Legislators Get Quick Protection Fence
Breitbart reports: Legislators on Capitol Hill got protection from a seven-foot border fence within 18 hours of the January 6 riot, according to Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy.

“At 9 am this morning, we began erecting a seven-foot non-scalable fence,” he said January 7, the day after a mass of protestors and rioters burst into the Capitol Hill building and forced legislators to temporarily stop counting the votes from the Electoral College that actually selects the winning presidential candidates.

The border wall will create a protective square around legislators on Capitol Hill. It will stand “from Constitution [Ave.], Independence [Ave.] and First Avenue, to in front of the pond right there in front of the Capitol,” McCarthy said.

The border fence will remain for at least 30 days, McCarthy said. The extra protection on Capitol Hill includes 850 National Guard soldiers from the District of Columbia, who are part of 6,200 mobilized guard soldiers, he added.

DML: But… Democrats don’t want a border wall, and want to abolish ICE?

4 – Rep. Thomas Massie: ‘Several of Us’ Were Glad to Be Armed While Barricaded
Breitbart reports: The day after riots brought the U.S. Capitol to a standstill, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) noted that “several” representatives were happy to be armed while barricaded in their offices.

Following the riotous events, Massie tweeted, “The next member who argues Congressmen shouldn’t be allowed to carry firearms at work needs to be laughed out of the Capitol.”

Massie co-chairs the House Second Amendment Caucus along with Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO). On January 3, 2021 — just three days before the Capitol riots — Boebert tweeted about the caucus’s fight to preserve House members’ ability to be armed for self-defense:

DML: Our 2nd Amendment must always be protected!

5 – Biden and Harris facing backlash for suggesting Capitol Hill rioters treated better than ‘peaceful’ BLM protesters
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris both gave speeches on Thursday condemning the violent riot at the Capitol building, then turned it into a race issue, claiming that if the protesters were black, they would’ve been treated differently.

Biden claimed, “No one can tell me that if it had been a group of Black Lives Matter protesting yesterday, they wouldn’t have been treated very, very differently than the mob of thugs that stormed the Capitol. We all know that’s true, and it is unacceptable. Totally unacceptable.”

And Harris declared, “We witnessed two systems of justice when we saw one that let extremists storm the United States Capitol, and another that released tear gas on peaceful protesters last summer. The American people had expressed, rightly, outrage. We know this is unacceptable. We know we should be better than this.”

DML: There’s a double standard, all right – but it’s with DEMS. Read my post below:
